I am an active on the South Carolina Arts Commissions artist roster (A juried roster of professional artists.) Through them I am available for residencies in their programs such as AIE (Artist in Education.)

I also perform at festivals and do one day workshops at ART CENTERS, MUSEUMS and other venues.

I offer the following residencies:

SCREEN PRINTING (Serigraphy is the correct name for fine art screen printing)

One week All ages but students produce different types of prints. 1st – 4th grade produce a single color print. 5th grade and above learn color separation and print multiple times on paper or cloth. This is available as a 5 day residency printing 3 times on the same print. It is also available as a 4 day residency printing twice on the same print.

Students will learn how to create a screen appropriate design, prepare color separations and how to print the methods I have developed allows the entire class off one screen and is the most economical method to teach screen printing. Because of this you can afford to continue with printing projects. As options we can print on T-shirts or a mural board Just be sure and tell me that is what you want before we book the residency.

LINOCUT OR WOOD BLOCK 1 or 2 weeks (This involves cutting tools and requires a release from the parents.)

“Brahma Bull,” 12″ x 12″ Linocut print.

Students will learn to design and carve a lino-cut. In one week we can produce a one color lino-cut. In two weeks we will make a reductive multi-color print.

BLOCK PRINTING WITH SCISSORS Suitable for 4th grade and above.

Using a soft cutting material the students will design and print a multicolored block type print. This is a variation of block printing I devised to get around the schools limiting the use of cutting tools. I generally produce one of my own prints using traditional methods and cutting tools while at the residency. This is done during time out of the residency classes. I own the prints but as a courtesy will usually gift one of the prints to the art teacher sponsoring the residency. Students are invited to come watch.

MONO PRINTS 1 week 4th grade and above.

Students will explore the mono print process. This is a great way to introduce students to using a press if you have one. We can however print without a press.

ETCHING (Only for advanced students and only if you have a press)

This is best as a 4-8 week residency. I have a method that safer than the traditional acid bath it is however a little slower. The materials cost on this residency does not fit within my regular pricing. We need to discuss the costs after I know the number of students and the number of weeks.

*There is a bottle neck when using a press so the students will also research art history and write a paragraph on printmaking while waiting their turn to print.

COLLOGRAPH (This is sometimes spelled COLLAGRAPH both are correct) 1-2 weeks

Suitable for 4th grade and above.m This can be done without a press. A press isd the more traditional method.

*There is a bottle neck when using a press so the students will also research art history and write a paragraph on printmaking while waiting their turn to print.

STAMP PRINTING This works as a 2 day residency or a two hour one day workshop. All ages!

This is a great way to introduce students who have never printed to the basics of image reversal and transfer of ink.

This works with any age and can be printed on paper or fabric.

PAPIER MACHE 1-2 weeks

You can chose between mask making or bowls. THe students will make a project and cover it with colored paper. If we have two weeks middle school and up can create a head sized design like a dragon head, anime head.

DRAWING SEMINAR ONE DAY

I was originally a natural at drawing. Back in 1988 I broke my neck and had to reteach myself how to draw. The instruction in this residency is built on my observations of students who were naturally talented at drawing plus my knowledge of classical art techniques from history.

*This seminar was good enough that one year the Spartanburg schools gave their art teachers a training day to attend my residency and observe how I taught the students.

WATERCOLOR 1-2 weeks

Your students will learn watercolor techniques. We can paint still life or if you have attractive flowers or landscapes at the school we can walk out and paint, “Plein Aire.”

GOUACHE 1-2 weeks

Your students will learn watercolor techniques. We can paint still life or if you have attractive flowers or landscapes at the school we can walk out and paint “Plein Aire.”

CALLIGRAPHY Suitable for 5th grade and above.

Students will be exposed to Italic and pointed flexible pen alphabets. We will start with brief history of how styles of writing came into existence and the types of instruments used. ‘Students will then copy alphabets in different styles. By the end of the residency students will have style sheets that they keep. Along with having learned how to handle different pen types to create various types of lines. On the final day we will explore free style and embellishment. This residency is a great introduction to discussing line.

MANY OF THE RESIDENCIES ABOVE CAN BE DONE AS ONE DAY WORKSHOPS WHERE PARTICIPANTS SPEND 2 TO 6 HOURS IN ONE DAY.
